Protecting Our Jua Kali Artisans — Policy Memorandum Submitted

Our office submitted a policy memorandum to the Ministry of Cooperatives requesting permanent manufacturing zones for jua kali mechanics and metalworkers in Eastlands.

Our office recently submitted a detailed policy memorandum to the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSME Development. The document requests dedicated, permanent manufacturing zones for jua kali mechanics and metalworkers in Eastlands, shielding them from arbitrary land evictions and giving them access to stable electricity connections.

The memorandum outlines a three-phase plan: first, the identification and gazettement of suitable land parcels in Embakasi Central; second, the construction of shared workshop facilities with electricity and water connections; and third, the registration and formalization of all artisans into official cooperatives with access to government procurement opportunities.

"Jua kali artisans are the silent backbone of our urban economy. They fix our cars, build our furniture, and weld our gates — yet they have no formal land tenure and can be evicted at any moment. This must change," said Hon. Mwangi.
